Removable bite blocks may be required as a part of Clearstep treatment. They are worn in conjunction with the clear positioners and on occasion other appliances such as the CODA.
The bite blocks are a thin layer of clear acrylic material that overlay the top surface of two of the back molar teeth in the lower jaw.
They are an alternative option to the composite bite blocks which are fixed in place. Although these bite blocks may be removable, they must be worn continually, especially
during eating.
The acrylic material raises the surface of the back teeth slightly. When the teeth bite together, the back teeth meet before the front teeth do. Therefore, by taking this
approach and raising the surface of the back teeth, it interrupts the way in which the teeth are biting together in the rest of the mouth.
Interrupting the bite in this way allows Clearstep to undertake movements that would not otherwise be possible, as the teeth in the opposing jaw would interfere.
Once the teeth have been moved to the correct positioner, the Clearstep practitioner will advise the patient to cease wearing the removable bite blocks.
The removable bite blocks must be worn at all times as directed by the Clearstep practitioner, including during eating. If the patient fails to wear the appliance when
they eat, it will affect the movement of the teeth and result in a negative impact on treatment.
The bite blocks must be removed after eating to be cleaned with a soft bristly tooth brush and warm running water.
Once a day the bite blocks must be removed and soaked in Retainer Brite or a similar product to sterilise them.
