What is important to us is that you know the choices you have and how that allows you to decide what is best for you.

What is a Denture?

A denture is a removable appliance that is used to replace missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. Most commonly, two types of material of dentures are available to you at Shine Dental. There are also full and partial dentures. Full dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

What do Dentures Look Like?

Dentures nowadays look very natural and will give your smile a life like and healthy appearance. Teeth give your lips, cheeks and face structure and losing too many will make your face look older and your cheeks sink in. As well as restoring your smile, dentures will improve the shape of your face, giving you a more youthful appearance. They have the ability to restore your confidence and generally make everyday life a whole lot easier!

How Long Will My Dentures Last?

The lifespan of both types of denture depend fully on how you treat your dentures. They should be replaced every seven/eight years for hygiene reasons. Your dentures may need to be relined from time to time or even re-made due to normal wear or a change in the shape of your mouth. Bone and gum ridges can shrink, causing your jaws to meet differently. There is nothing worse than loose fitting dentures! This can cause a huge amount of discomfort, not to mention sores and infections. It will also make eating and speaking extremely difficult for the denture wearer.

Because of this, it is very important that you come to see us regularly so that we can check the fit of your denture and make sure everything in your mouth is healthy!

For more information about dentures or if you are worried yours arent fitting correctly, please do not hesitate to give us a call at the practice! We will be more than happy to help!

The options of denture available to you're here are:

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures will be ready to wear on the same day as your teeth are extracted - they can be in the form of a partial or a complete denture. Immediate dentures are more of a temporary measure and it may be a few months of waiting for your gums to heal after such treatment before you can have the final dentures.

Having a set of immediate dentures prevents people from having to spend many weeks without any teeth and allows them to get on with their normal lives. They are not as effective as permanent dentures but they restore a degree of function and are an attractive alternative to having no teeth.

The use of metal dentures could provide a number of benefits to the lives of denture wearers who have experienced a lack of confidence or previously loose plastic denture. A primary benefit of wearing metal dentures is the fact that they are custom-made to ensure it is compatible with the tissue of the mouth in a bid to completely remove the risk of allergic reactions or gum irritations.

The clasps which attach around remaining teeth help to improve the denture retention and they are also very discreet. They are smaller than acrylic dentures and do not fully cover the roof of the mouth, unlike the acrylic denture. This means your taste sensation is improved, which means you can taste food better than if the roof of your mouth was fully covered.

They are also extremely durable and are less likely to break or bend out of shape. They also maximise comfort for the wearer and are easier to speak in. The snug fit of the appliance when it is placed into the mouth means it is very comfortable to wear, which could bring relief for people who have been worried about the feeling of an alien object in their mouth for a long period of time.

Although metal dentures may be more expensive than the acrylic denture, the long-lasting nature alongside the comfort factor and retention make it worthwhile for individuals looking to improve their quality of life.

Acrylic Dentures

Dentures of this kind are typically cheaper to manufacture and require a less sophisticated design than others. These pink acrylic dentures are supported mainly by the gums. While the plastic components can surround the existing teeth in the mouth, they do not gain any substantial levels of stability from them. Some acrylic partial fittings feature metal clips for better retention also. They are the most common type of denture.

There are several benefits for denture wearers of this kind. The presence of teeth helps to provide a natural facial appearance and can provide support for the lips and cheeks that can often take on a 'collapsed' appearance in patients with missing teeth. They provide you with the ability to chew food and your speech would be much improved. Consequently, dentures can not only boost the health and appearance of the mouth and face, but also of the body as a whole.

All dentures of this nature are finished in high-impact acrylic, meaning they are able to stand up to the wear and tear that affects teeth on a daily basis.
